Note: At this point, if you are familiar with the programs in general, you may wish to scroll down a bit and save yourself from my verbose introduction.
Yes, indeed, there are people out there generous enough to actually pay you for the time you spend online. The way it works is that you download a little program, sometimes called a 'viewbar,' that parks itself at the bottom of your screen while you use your favourite web browser. This viewbar rotates a series of advertisement banners, upon which you may click if you are so inclined. These advertisers are presumably where their money comes from, and looking at the ads is how you earn yours.
You are paid an hourly rate, usually from $.40-$1.00 per hour. On most programs there is a monthly cap on the number of hours you can be paid to surf, and this limits the amount of money you can make to around $20 or less. The way to make a lot more money is by referrals. When you annoy your friends into signing up, and they use your referral number, you get paid a certain amount for the time they spend online. You can also be paid for the time the referalls of your referrals (indirect referrals) spend online. If you are into spamming, or have a high-traffic web site (it is to laugh), then you can really rake in some dough.
Now, at this point, being the inteligent person that you are (as evidenced by the fact that you are visiting this web site), you are probably under the impression that there is a catch or three to all this. And you are correct.
First and foremost among these drawbacks are those damned advertisments. Sure, that is what you are being paid for, but they are just really really annoying. They're usually for something like Ties or Healthy Food, or other similarly lame items, and completely fail to be of any interest while, at the same time, completely distracting you from more interesting things.
Secondly, from a more practical standpoint, they only pay you for time that you are actually surfing the web. This means that the viewbars only log time for which your web browser is the active window and your mouse is moving about (usually 3-5 minute intervals, at least). This means that if you get up, say, for the purpose of using the bathroom or beating and old woman, the viewbar will probably lapse into the 'not paying you but still running damn advertisements'mode. Furthermore, the programs usually only pay in whole minute increments. So, if you are online but constantly switching between tasks, you may find your payed time slashed, even if the stupid ads are still running.
However, the ingenuity and intrepidity of the internet community, or at least the less vapid non-AOLesque part of it, has proven equal to the challenge and triumphed over these irrational expectations. Programs have been created which cause the viewbars to think that you are surfing the web when, in actuality, you are sleeping or watching Sailor Moon. Watch for the big blue cat and lesbian tendencies on the part of Sailors Mercury and Jupiter.
So, toward the end of rewarding society's most underewarded class (the lazy internet junkie), here is a list of "Get Paid to Surf" programs and the methods clever people use to.....
Please note that I am looking for referrals so I can make a little bit of money too. Whether you give a referral number or not in no way affects your earnings, but could for someone else, like me. Please be kind and say I refered you. Thank you very much.
AllAdvantage.com
My reference ID: DST-072
Description: AllAdvantage was, I believe, the first "Get Paid to Surf" program out there. They are also one of the most reliable, in that they actually send out checks on a quasi-predictable basis. They are also quite easy to hack, at least for the time being.
Method of circumvention: After signup, download the following two programs:
Install viewbar 1.1, enter your username and password, and then close it. Then run aautil.exe, browse to the location of your AllAdvantage Viewbar (C:\Program Files\AllAdvantage.com\Viewbar\ if you used the default). Click on patch. The viewbar will now pay you constantly, regardless of what window you have open (if any). An even better trick is to click on the hide button, which will get rid of the viewbar yet still pay you. You will need to keep your mouse moving, and that is what Trembler is for. Super!
Notes: Be sure to say that you are at least 18 when you sign up. Otherwise you will have to forge an adult authorization form before they send you checks.
